<insert foot in mouth; twist violently>
After staring at the sendmail configs blankly I decided to look at the
available HOWTOs on this subject. Unsurprisingly, there was one that
answered my question squarely :F If you see this message, that mini-
HOWTO worked.
See your local metalab mirror, at Linux/docs/HOWTO/mini/Sendmail-Address-Rewrite.
The solution presented there is basically what has been suggested before
(SMART_HOST to relay), with the addition of masquerade_envelope, disabling DNS,
and using a genericstable to map local email addresses. I'd seen the
masquerade_envelope option before, but I was unaware that it also worked
with SMART_HOST. I bet that (with nodns) solved most all of my sendmail
woes. In addition, the genericstable is a pretty neat way of fixing
my outbound email addresses; since it works at the MTA level instead
of the MUA level it won't mess with local mail, and it means I can
finally use a local username different than that at my ISP.
Thanks to everybody who helped me out here.
