Might I also suggest ClamWin. The interface leaves a bit to be
desired on Windows, but the command line client on Linux (which can
scan any Linux supported filesystem) is just downright powerful.
Having said that. I generally recommend AVG for friends and family.
It seems to stay up to date, is fairly intuitive, and full featured.
